Guide: Fix the Infinite Windows Update Loop for KB5127070 (Missing WinRE Partition)

 Overview

Windows Update KB5127070 is a mandatory security update targeting the Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE) [KB5127070]. On certain devices—particularly laptops like MSI notebooks that use custom factory partition layouts, or systems that have undergone clean OS reinstallations—the recovery partition may be missing, corrupted, or disabled.

Because Windows Update sees your operating system version, it continuously attempts to download and install the update. Without a valid destination path, the installation fails silently, resulting in an infinite update and reboot loop.

This guide details how to diagnose the issue, apply a temporary dummy fix to clear the loop, and ultimately restore a fully functional, real recovery image on a custom directory or drive.

Phase 1: Diagnose the Problem

Before changing any files, you must verify the exact status of your system’s recovery image.

Click the Start Menu, type cmd, right-click Command Prompt, and select Run as administrator.

Type the following command and press Enter:

reagentc /info

Examine the output. If the system is suffering from a missing partition loop, you will see:

Windows RE status: Disabled

Windows RE location: (This line will be completely blank)

Next, attempt to force-enable it:

reagentc /enable

If the prompt returns REAGENTC.EXE: The Windows RE image was not found, your recovery environment is entirely missing from the drive, which is causing the update loop.

Phase 2: The Immediate Fix (Breaking the Update Loop)

To stop Windows Update from failing and looping, you must trick the system into thinking the target path and file exist. This satisfies the update installer so it can flag a “Success” state and disappear.

In the Administrator Command Prompt, create a fake, empty recovery file exactly where Windows expects it:

fsutil file createnew C:\Windows\System32\Recovery\Winre.wim 0

Manually link Windows to look at this directory path:

reagentc /setreimage /path C:\Windows\System32\Recovery

Re-enable the environment:

reagentc /enable

(The terminal should now display REAGENTC.EXE: Operation Successful).

4. Open Windows Update and check for updates. KB5127070 will download, apply itself to the dummy structure, log a successful install, and stop prompting you to reboot.

Phase 3: The Advanced Fix (Restoring a Real, Working Recovery Image)

While the dummy file stops the update loop, it does not provide an actual working recovery screen if your PC crashes. Follow these steps to build a real recovery environment on a custom drive or directory (e.g., I:\Recovery).

Step 1: Extract a Genuine winre.wim File

Because your laptop’s recovery image was wiped, you must pull a fresh copy from official Microsoft installation media.

Download a standard Windows 10 ISO that matches your current OS version and architecture (64-bit).

Right-click the downloaded ISO and select Mount.

Open the virtual disc drive, open the sources folder, and look for either install.wim or install.esd.

Open the install.wim or install.esd file using an archive extractor like 7-Zip.

Within the 7-Zip window, open one of the numbered folders (e.g., 1 or 2), and navigate to: Windows\System32\Recovery\

Locate the real winre.wim file (typically between 400MB and 600MB). Drag and extract it onto your desktop.

Step 2: Set Up the Custom Directory

Open your Administrator Command Prompt.

Create the new destination folder on your target drive (e.g., your I: drive):

mkdir I:\Recovery\WindowsRE

Move or copy the real winre.wim file you just extracted from your desktop directly into this new folder (I:\Recovery\WindowsRE\winre.wim).

Step 3: Link and Lock the Real Recovery Image

You must now disconnect the temporary dummy setup and point Windows to your newly created directory.

Temporarily disable the recovery configuration variables:

reagentc /disable

Point the system to your new custom drive path:

reagentc /setreimage /path I:\Recovery\WindowsRE

Permanently re-enable the environment:

reagentc /enable

Phase 4: Verification

To guarantee that your recovery environment is working perfectly and that Windows Update will recognize it moving forward:

Run the status check command one final time:

reagentc /info

Verify that Windows RE status reads Enabled and the location line points precisely to your custom path (I:\Recovery\WindowsRE).

2. Note on Visibility: If you open File Explorer and look inside I:\Recovery\WindowsRE, the folder may appear completely empty. This is expected behavior. The moment reagentc /enable runs, Windows automatically applies protected system hidden attributes to winre.wim to prevent accidental deletion.

3. To confirm it is physically there, run this command in your command prompt:

dir /a I:\Recovery\WindowsRE\

The terminal will reveal the hidden winre.wim file along with its companion boot.smd configuration files.

How to Boot Into Your New Recovery Environment

If you ever need to use this recovery screen to troubleshoot your PC, you can launch it instantly without using standard motherboard or branded laptop boot menus:

The Shift-Click Method: Open the Windows Start Menu -> click the Power icon -> hold down the Shift key -> click Restart.

The Command Prompt Method: Open a standard Command Prompt window and type:

shutdown /r /o /t 0

Your system will reboot directly into the newly constructed, fully updated official Microsoft Windows Recovery Environment.

Powerline Ethernet fun and secrets.

Many 200 Mb/s powerline adapters nowadays are based on the INTELLON 6300 chipset. Despite what can be thought looking at them, they are all using the same hardware and firmwares. I heard many people with Netgear XAV101 or Linksys PLK 200 or PLE 200 having problems after firmware updates and many other people with other brands having much more problems because of lack of support or configuration/upgrade utilities. So let me explain a few things I learnt studying them. Many of 200 Mb/s powerline ethernet adapters follow the "HomePlug AV" standard. (85 Mb adapters use HomePlug 1.0 standard which is completely different). This standard uses ethernet broadcast packets using the HomePlug AV protocol. The interesting thing is that their firmware is made of two different parts: a .PIB file (Parameter Information Block) and a .NVM file (the code itself). In the P.I.B. there are many interesting things: The branding (mac address, device name, etc) and the tone map. I test...

TP-LINK Configuration file encrypt and decrypt.

Here we go! TP-Link is another company that thinks that security by obscurity could ever work. If you "backup" the configuration from most TP-Link routers, you will get a .BIN file which is "encrypted". Use this utility below, to decrypt it (so you can edit it) and encrypt it again. Have fun.
